Angelo Frei

Angelo Frei is Assistant Professor in Inorganic Chemistry at the University of York (former SNSF Ambizione Fellow at the University of Bern). His research interests lie in the discovery, development and understanding of transition metal-based antibiotic agents.
Early in his career, he showed that metal-based compounds are more likely to be active against critical bacteria compared to pure organic molecules. At the same time this work highlighted that metal-based compounds are not more likely to be toxic compared to their metal-free counterparts. This laid the foundation for his research where he now leverages cutting-edge approaches such as modular synthesis, automation and machine learning to discover novel metalloantibiotics.

Antibiotic Resistance – Could Metals Be the Answer?
For decades, antibiotics seemed to keep dangerous infections under control. But today, resistance is spreading—and even routine illnesses can turn deadly again. This film follows a search for answers: could metal complexes become the next line of defense?
