With this series of videos, the University of Bern is giving you an insight into interesting educational content on current scientific and social issues. Thanks to the interactive nature of the videos, you can immerse yourself in the topics however you like and expand your knowledge – in a fun, entertaining, and varied way. It’s worth coming back as the video series is constantly being expanded.

#6: Mental Health Issues & Strategies

Every second person suffers from mental health disorders at least once in their lifetime. In this interactive video we get to know three people with different psychological challenges and learn which strategies they have developed in dealing with their challenges. As viewers, we get involved in their decision-making and experience how difficult it can be to find your own solutions.

Florence von Gunten

Florence von Gunten is a psychologist, prospective psychotherapist and founder of the start-up YLAH, which is bringing a digital solution for "Blended Psychotherapy" to clinics and practices. Through her scientific work at the Universities of Bern and Bristol (UK), her further training and her many years of experience in child and adolescent psychiatry, she brings expertise in psychotherapy research and practice.

Our perception is our reality. We perceive the world around us as distinct and unambiguous and take information for granted. But our perception is not always clear, and we can also be mistaken. But how does our brain process information?

Fred Mast

Fred Mast is Professor of Cognitive Psychology, Perception and Methodology and Methodology and heads the department with the same name. He specializes in mental imagery, multisensory integration, and visual perception. He and his team use psychophysical methods, eye-tracking, motion platforms, and brain imaging techniques.

Winner of MEDEA Award!

A 50-person jury crowned “Democracy vs. Sustainability” as the winner of the MEDEA Award 2022, a competition supported by the EU Commission. It shows us that there is still a lot of potential in the connection between gaming, video and learning. We can’t wait to be going that path even further.

Life on Jupiter's Moons?

There is evidence that jupiter's icy moons harbour voluminous oceans beneath their ice crusts. The resemblance of these subsurface oceans to Earth’s deep-sea environment suggests that they could be habitable for microbial life. In 2023, the spacecraft JUICE will start its journey to investigate Jupiter’s three icy moons. Among many other science goals, JUICE will try to sample ocean water and analyse it for organic molecules that may indicate the presence of life.

#4: Democracy vs. Sustainability

Step into the shoes of a small town’s Mayor and work your way up to the federal office. Make sustainable decisions for the benefit of the citizens. Should a food waste app be mandatory or voluntary? Should the majority of voters out rule the minorities? Are political processes even compatible with sustainability?

Karin Ingold

Karin Ingold is professor at the Institute of Political Science and the Vice-President of the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research (OCCR). Through her research, she became a scholar of the Advocacy Coalition Framework and other policy process theories. The compatibility of political processes and sustainability is illustrated in this gamification video.

MEDEA Awards for the second time!

For the second time one of our flashMOOCs war nominated for the MEDEA Awards 2021: "How to Cope With Religious Conflicts – Insights From History" participated at the awards ceremony together with five other international videos.

MEDEA Awards Finalist!

The flashMOOC "Pest Control Strategies for Sustainable Agriculture" was nominated for the MEDEA Awards 2020. The film prevailed against numerous international entries and participated with six other finalists in the award ceremony.

#1: Banks and Financial Crises

In this video, you will learn how the 2008 financial crisis came about and how it all relates to the functioning of and risks affecting banks. You will understand what measures were employed which prevented a second “Great Depression” to occur, because the economic situation in 2008 was almost on par with the situation in the 1930s.

#3: Religious Conflicts

We illustrate a model for a context-sensitive analysis of religious conflicts. Based on three historical case studies and their respective coping strategies, we will highlight the importance of a differentiated approach to better understand religious conflicts.

Katharina Heyden

Katharina Heyden is full professor of Ancient History of Christianity and Interreligious Encounters. Her research focuses on religious conflicts and coexistence in antiquity and the Middle Ages. Together with an interdisciplinary research group she currently works on a better understanding of religious conflicts and coping strategies.

#2: Control Insect Pests

Taking the western corn rootworm as an example, discover which strategies are in place to control pests and learn about their advantages and disadvantages. With this video you will know the role that basic research has to play in developing new, sustainable strategies to fight insect pests and ensure food safety on planet earth.

Aymo Brunetti

As a full professor of Economic Policy and Regional Economics, former Head of the Economic Policy Directorate at the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), and managing director of the Center for Regional Economic Development (CRED), Aymo Brunetti combines encyclopedic knowledge of economics with teaching skills.

Matthias Erb

Matthias Erb studies the interactions between plants and insect pests at molecular, chemical, and ecological level. In his role as Director of the Interfaculty Research Cooperation “One Health”, he also has a significant part to play in closing the circle that leads from soil and plants to the health of animals and humans.
